Theatre and Performance Making

Before formulating and trying out strategies of creating original theatre and performance material, this workshop will look at the shift from Theatre to Performance that has occurred throughout the 20th century. A series of lectures and tutorials will discuss and practically explore the work of some groundbreaking theatre and performance makers and challenge the participants to formulate their own strategies of creating original theatre and performance material. It is not about copying the avant-garde of the past, but expanding ones own boundaries of perception and practice. The group of participants can be divers. A mix of actors, directors, dramaturges, writers, designers and others is welcome. However, this mix is not a prerequisite. A group of acting students would benefit from this workshop, as well as a class of directing students.

Meyerhold’s Biomechanics

This introductory workshop clarifies the particular terminology of Meyerhold’s psychophysical actors training and gives a practical as well as a theoretical understanding of how he communicated with his actors on stage. The practical work of the intensive workshop is accompanied by lectures about the historical and political context in which Meyerhold worked. His days as an acting student with Constantin Stanislavski, the split and the reunification with him play an important part in those lectures.

Physical Theatre Foundations

This workshop introduces the student to an awareness of their body in preparation for performance. Experiential and highly physical, it explores methods and principles that have become foundational within performance practice. As well as developing an understanding of the neutral body — ‘putting oneself in a state of readiness’— it draws upon a variety of historical and contemporary practitioners and philosophies of bodywork that emphasise improvisation, discovery, and expressivity.

  • a 1-day introduction

  • a 1-week intensive workshop.

TESTIMONIALS

"Ralf clearly knows what he is doing. Watching him work with participants was great, he really listens, sees and encourages each participant from their space, from what they already know. He communicated well, and worked well with young and old alike. I felt comfortable working collaboratively on the blocking and show development with him, and look forward to working with him in the future."

Ushan Boyd - Project Manager, Theatre Kimberley.

Bertolt Brecht

John Willett’s early translation of Brecht’s German term Verfremdungseffekt to Alienation had a misleading effect on the understanding of Brecht’s ideas about theatre and acting in English speaking countries. The workshop will clarify this and other misunderstandings, introduce alternatives to the use of the term Alienation and present Brecht in a new light. His often assumed opposition in regards to Stanislavski is another misunderstanding that will be corrected, as well as the wrong idea that Brechtian acting is cold and without any emotion.

Meyerhold’s Theatre and Biomechanics in a 20th Century context

This workshop can be taught as a follow up or independently from the one above (in this case an introductory session of Biomechanics will be added). Practical and theoretical sessions will enable participants to contextualize Meyerhold’s theatre and Biomechanics within the complex development of Performing Arts in the 20th Century. Looking at connections and differences in regards to Brecht, Decroux, Grotowski, Brook, Lecoq and Barba saves Meyerhold’s legacy from becoming dusty in the Museum of Theatre History, puts it back on stage and shows the potential value it still has for us today.

  • a semesters work on producing a Physical Theatre performance, starting from this workshop.

WOM Corporate training

There is a growing motivation for companies to offer special training to enhance the performance of their staff. Good performance in leadership positions needs a foundation in performance skills. Presence is the keyword here. It is the first and foremost quality of an inspiring performer/actor to be present in the moment, to listen, to see and to take action, empowered by the total awareness of oneself and others in the space. From 2014, WOM will offer specialised workshops that use theatre and performance elements as tools to empower staff in leadership positions.
